**Allahabad, India** – The Allahabad High Court will resume its hearing on December 19th regarding a petition alleging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi holds dual citizenship. The petition, filed by BJP leader Vignesh Shishir, claims Gandhi possesses British citizenship, citing purported emails from the UK government obtained during a previous inquiry.
While the UK government reportedly confirmed some information, it withheld full details citing data protection laws. The petitioner argues this evidence, coupled with Article 9 of the Indian Constitution which prohibits dual citizenship, disqualifies Gandhi from holding Indian citizenship.
The Union government, represented by Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey, informed the court on November 25th that the Home Ministry is reviewing the petition. The court’s focus remains on whether the government has processed the petitioner’s representations, not on the broader allegations or calls for a CBI investigation.
A similar petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, but that court will await the Allahabad High Court’s decision before proceeding. The December 19th hearing will be crucial, as the government is expected to present its findings and stance on the allegations against Mr. Gandhi.
