**Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh –** The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a majority in the Uttar Pradesh by-elections held on Wednesday, winning seven out of the nine contested assembly seats. The Samajwadi Party (SP) won two seats, while the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) secured one.
The counting of votes, which began this morning, saw a close contest in several constituencies, with accusations of scuffles and altercations reported at some counting centers. In Prayagraj, a clash broke out between BJP and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers, prompting swift action from election officials who vowed strong legal action.
While the BJP celebrated victories in Ghaziabad (BJP candidate Sanjeev Sharma winning by a significant margin of 70,600 votes), Khair, and Fhulpur, the SP secured wins in Sisamau (Naseem Solanki) and Katehri. The RLD candidate Mithilesh Pal took the lead in Meerapur.
The BJP’s victory in Kundarki marks a significant win, ending a 32-year drought for the party in that constituency. However, the SP put up a strong fight, maintaining a lead in several seats throughout the counting process before the final results were declared.
The by-elections were held for nine seats – Meerapur, Kundarki, Sisamau, Katehri, Phulpur, Majhwan, Ghaziabad, Karhal, and Khair – that were previously won by a mix of BJP, SP and RLD in the 2022 assembly elections. The results signify a continued hold on power for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, albeit with a spirited challenge from the opposition. The close contests in several constituencies underscore the ongoing political battle in the state.
