**Mumbai, India** – Varun Sardesai of the Shiv Sena (UBT), nephew of Uddhav Thackeray, is currently leading in the Vandre East constituency in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. With over 12 rounds of counting completed, Sardesai holds a substantial lead of over 7,000 votes against NCP candidate Zeeshan Siddique. Sardesai has secured nearly 43,000 votes, while Siddique trails with approximately 36,000. MNS candidate Truptti Bala Sawant is a distant third with nearly 14,000 votes.
Siddique, son of the late politician Baba Siddique, recently joined the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP. His switch followed accusations that the Maha Vikas Aghadi abandoned him and his father after Baba Siddique’s assassination by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Siddique, who previously won the seat in 2019 as a Congress member, was expelled from the party earlier this year due to alleged cross-voting in legislative council elections.
Vote counting is also underway for Jharkhand assembly elections and by-elections across 15 states, with all results expected today.
