**Mumbai, Maharashtra –** Early results from the Maharashtra Assembly elections show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) poised for a significant victory in Mumbai, the birthplace of the Shiv Sena. With one seat already secured and leads in 16 others, the BJP is on track to dominate the city’s 36 assembly constituencies.
The split within the Shiv Sena has significantly impacted the results. Uddhav Thackeray’s faction (Shiv Sena (UBT)) is leading in eight seats, while Eknath Shinde’s faction leads in seven. Aaditya Thackeray (Shiv Sena (UBT)) maintains a strong lead in Worli.
The Congress, which originated in Mumbai, is performing poorly, with leads in only two seats. The Samajwadi Party’s Abu Azmi is likely to retain his Mankhurd Shivajinagar seat. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also holds a lead in one constituency.
The BJP contested the most seats within the Mahayuti alliance (BJP, Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Ajit Pawar-led NCP), while the Shiv Sena (UBT) contested the most within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance (Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, Sharad Pawar-led NCP).
The Shiv Sena (UBT)’s campaign strategy, focusing on concerns about BJP control and the “Adani-isation” of Mumbai, appears to have had limited success. However, the MVA holds a lead in Dharavi, with Congress candidate Jyoti Gaikwad significantly ahead.
These results contrast with the Lok Sabha elections where the Shiv Sena (UBT) performed better. In the 2019 Assembly elections, the undivided Shiv Sena won 14 seats in Mumbai, while the BJP won 16. The Congress had a particularly poor showing then, winning only four of 29 contested seats. The Mankhurd Shivajinagar seat, a key battleground this election, is likely to go to the Samajwadi Party. High-profile contests in Worli and Mahim also saw significant activity.
