Fri Nov 22 18:00:58 UTC 2024: ## Pakistan Mourns 42 Shia Muslims Killed in Ambush

**Peshawar, Pakistan –** At least 42 Shia Muslims were killed and 20 injured in a brutal ambush in Pakistan’s Kurram district on Thursday, November 21st, sparking widespread protests and escalating sectarian tensions. The victims, traveling in a convoy from Parachinar to Peshawar, were attacked by gunmen who opened fire from another vehicle. Six women were among the dead.

Funeral prayers held on Friday in Lahore and Parachinar were followed by demonstrations where protesters chanted anti-government slogans and expressed outrage over the lack of security. Some protesters set fire to checkpoints and city gates. The Shia community announced three days of mourning.

The attack, one of the deadliest sectarian assaults in recent years, occurred in an area where Shia Muslims are the majority population. Sectarian violence between Shia and Sunni Muslims has been on the rise in the region in recent months, fueled by a land dispute that escalated into wider conflict in July. Tribal elders are attempting to quell the unrest, but clashes between Sunni and Shia tribes continued following the Parachinar funerals.

Police have yet to identify the perpetrators or a motive for the attack. A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed further casualties from the ensuing tribal clashes but could not provide exact numbers. The incident highlights the ongoing sectarian challenges facing Pakistan, where Shia Muslims constitute approximately 15% of the population. The attack has reignited concerns about the safety and security of religious minorities in the country.
