RANCHI, INDIA – Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has led his Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress alliance to a resounding victory in the state assembly elections, defying pre-election predictions and securing a second consecutive term in office. This marks a historic first for Jharkhand, which has previously seen frequent changes in government.
Initial trends indicate the JMM-Congress alliance is poised to win over 55 seats, exceeding the majority mark of 42 in the 81-seat assembly. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is projected to win approximately 23 seats. The alliance’s success spans all key regions of the state.
The election campaign was marked by a fierce contest between the JMM and the BJP. The BJP, utilizing high-profile leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, focused on allegations of illegal immigration from Bangladesh, claiming it threatened the state’s resources and tribal communities.
In contrast, the JMM centered its campaign on its social welfare programs, particularly the Mukhyamantri Maiya Samman Yojana, which provides monthly financial assistance to women. The party also effectively utilized a narrative emphasizing tribal pride (“adivasi asmita”). Increased women’s voter turnout, with higher participation in 68 out of 81 constituencies, is believed to have significantly contributed to the JMM’s success.
The lead-up to the election was challenging for the JMM. Chief Minister Soren faced arrest on money laundering charges in January, leading to his temporary resignation and a subsequent period of political uncertainty, including defections within the party. Despite this, the JMM successfully framed the situation as the BJP’s harassment of a tribal leader, garnering public sympathy. Soren’s subsequent return as Chief Minister further strengthened this narrative. The BJP also attempted to leverage the defection of Soren’s sister-in-law to their party.
The JMM’s victory represents a significant upset and a clear rejection of the BJP’s campaign strategy in Jharkhand.
