**Ranchi, Jharkhand –** Early trends indicate a landslide victory for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led INDIA bloc in the Jharkhand Assembly elections. With trends available for 80 of the 81 seats, the JMM alliance is leading in a commanding 51, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance is ahead in only 28. The JMM alliance currently holds a 43.8% vote share compared to the BJP alliance’s 37.2%.
The JMM’s “Maiya Samman” direct benefit transfer scheme for women appears to have been a crucial factor in their success, particularly given the higher women’s voter turnout (higher than men in 68 of 81 seats). Political analysts suggest that this scheme, along with smooth vote transfer within the INDIA alliance, helped prevent the BJP from significantly impacting the JMM’s tribal-Muslim vote bank. Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren are both leading in their respective constituencies, with Kalpana Soren’s campaign focusing on the Maiya Samman scheme being particularly impactful.
The BJP’s campaign, which focused on allegations of infiltrators taking over tribal land, appears to have had minimal effect. They performed poorly in rural areas, with notable exceptions such as Potka where Arjun Munda’s wife Meera Munda holds a significant lead. Even in the Santhal Pargana region, traditionally a stronghold, the BJP appears to be significantly trailing.
The Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM), led by Jairam Mahato, appears to have impacted the Kurmi vote bank of the BJP ally, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), which is only ahead in two of the ten seats it contested.
While some close contests remain, including that of former Chief Minister Champai Soren, the early trends strongly suggest a decisive victory for the JMM-led INDIA bloc in Jharkhand. The final results, however, will depend on the remaining 13 rounds of counting.
