Sat Nov 23 10:14:56 UTC 2024: ## Azmi Faces Stiffest Re-election Battle Yet in Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar

**Mumbai, India** – Abu Azmi, the Samajwadi Party’s (SP) Maharashtra President and sitting MLA for Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar, faces his toughest re-election battle yet in the upcoming 2024 Assembly elections. While he’s held the seat for 15 years, criticism over alleged lack of development in the constituency, particularly in Mankhurd, one of Mumbai’s most underdeveloped areas, has emerged as a major challenge. The constituency also grapples with a youth drug problem, a point heavily emphasized by his main opponent, former minister Nawab Malik.

Malik’s campaign has focused on the alleged lack of development and the drug issue, posing a significant threat to Azmi’s long-standing dominance. Furthermore, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has fielded a local candidate, Atik Ahmed Khan, who is capitalizing on Azmi’s absence from the constituency and emphasizing his stronger local connection.

Azmi’s political career has been marked by both success and controversy. He was arrested under TADA in connection with the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, later acquitted. His strong oratory skills and populist appeal have garnered him significant support among the North Indian and Muslim communities in Mumbai, a key factor in his previous electoral wins. However, accusations of authoritarian leadership within the SP, leading to the departure of several MLAs, have also cast a shadow over his political career. Despite his past successes, the combination of Malik’s aggressive campaign and AIMIM’s local candidate presents a formidable hurdle for Azmi in the 2024 elections.
