Sat Nov 23 10:54:49 UTC 2024: ## BJP Sweeps Uttar Pradesh Bypolls, Adityanath Credits Good Governance

**Lucknow, UP** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a resounding victory in the recent Uttar Pradesh Assembly by-elections, winning two seats and leading in four others. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attributed the BJP’s strong performance to the state government’s good governance and welfare policies, citing it as a testament to the people’s faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

The by-elections, held across nine constituencies, saw the BJP triumph in Ghaziabad and Khair, with significant victory margins. The party also maintained a strong lead in Phulpur, Katehari, Majhawan, and Kundarki. The BJP’s ally, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), was ahead in Meerapur. The Samajwadi Party (SP) secured victory in Sisamau and was leading in Karhal.

Adityanath reiterated his controversial “batenge toh katenge” (we will retaliate) slogan and PM Modi’s “ek hain toh safe hain” (if you are with us, you are safe) message, which have drawn sharp criticism from the opposition for allegedly promoting religious division. While defending the slogans, Adityanath accused the opposition of using divisive tactics.

The SP’s Akhilesh Yadav condemned Adityanath’s slogans, characterizing them as highly negative and reminiscent of the British “divide and rule” policy. Similar criticism was voiced by the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra.

The by-elections, the first since the Lok Sabha polls, were necessitated by vacancies created after eight MLAs were elected to Parliament. The Sisamau seat became vacant following the disqualification of an SP MLA. The Congress supported the SP, while the BSP and other smaller parties also contested. The BJP’s strong showing solidifies its position in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, where it holds a significant majority.
