**Meppadi, Kerala, November 22, 2024** – A preliminary list identifying 520 families for rehabilitation following the Chooralmala landslide has been compiled by the Meppadi grama panchayat. Panchayat president K. Babu confirmed the list, compiled per district administration orders, details families residing in homes deemed uninhabitable.
The list will be presented at an all-party meeting next Tuesday, after which a draft will be released for public review. Following a period for addressing complaints and objections, a final list is expected by early December.
Initial plans for a survey by a special team to identify suitable resettlement areas, based on a report by an expert committee, were hampered by survivor protests. Survivors reportedly objected to the expert committee’s conclusion that the disaster area was safe at a certain distance.
The all-party meeting will also discuss the need for a separate survey for additional rehabilitation measures. Mr. Babu stated that this survey will proceed with community cooperation, acknowledging the importance of building trust with affected individuals. The process is expected to take time. Public representatives and officials will participate in the upcoming meeting.
