**Bengaluru/Canberra, Nov 22** – The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Australian Space Agency (ASA) have signed a landmark Implementation Agreement (IA) to bolster their space collaboration. The agreement, signed on November 20th, focuses specifically on crew and crew module recovery for India’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission, the nation’s first crewed spaceflight program.
The IA allows Australian authorities to assist in search and rescue operations and crew module recovery in the event of an emergency landing near Australian waters during the Gaganyaan mission’s ascent phase. This crucial support enhances the safety protocols for the three-person crew and their spacecraft.
ISRO Director D K Singh and ASA General Manager Jarrod Powell signed the agreement in Bengaluru and Canberra, respectively. The partnership reflects the growing strategic relationship between India and Australia, with both space agencies committed to expanding future collaborations. Gaganyaan aims to demonstrate India’s capability to launch and safely return a crewed spacecraft from Low Earth Orbit.
