Thu Nov 21 18:54:01 UTC 2024: ## Former Fiancée of Olympic Fencer Sentenced to 13 Years for $2.5 Million Fraud

**Seoul, South Korea** – A South Korean appellate court increased the prison sentence of Jeon Cheong-jo, 28, to 13 years for a massive fraud scheme. Jeon, previously known for her engagement to Olympic fencing medalist Nam Hyun-hee under false pretenses, was found guilty of swindling 35 people out of over 3.5 billion won ($2.5 million).

The Seoul High Court cited Jeon’s continued criminal activity even after serving time for previous fraud convictions. The court highlighted her elaborate schemes, including disguising herself as a man to date famous individuals, and noted that the majority of the stolen funds were spent on luxury goods, making restitution to victims extremely difficult. The court also expressed serious concerns about Jeon’s high risk of re-offending.

The sentence adds one year to the 12-year prison term handed down by a lower court. The prosecution had initially sought a 20-year sentence. Jeon’s notoriety stems from her previous engagement to Nam, which involved posing as a chaebol heir. The couple subsequently separated. A separate four-year sentence for assaulting and threatening Nam’s nephew was also consolidated into this ruling at Jeon’s request.
