Fri Nov 22 16:11:09 UTC 2024: ## Coimbatore’s Industrial Heritage: From Textile Hub to Engineering Powerhouse

**COIMBATORE, November 22, 2024** – Coimbatore, a city in southern India, boasts a rich industrial history deeply rooted in textiles, but its evolution extends far beyond its cotton origins. A look back reveals how the city transformed from a predominantly textile-based economy to a significant engineering hub.

For over a century, Coimbatore’s landscape has been shaped by textile mills, coffee curing yards, and leather godowns. The region’s vast cotton cultivation, with nearly 3.5 lakh acres under Cambodia cotton in 1925-26, fueled the growth of the textile industry. The Coimbatore Spinning and Weaving Mills (Staines Mill), established in 1888, marked the beginning of this era, followed by the Mall Mills in 1900. By the 1930s, Coimbatore boasted 21 mills, employing over 21,500 workers and producing sarees and other textiles exported to Sri Lanka.

However, Coimbatore’s industrial diversification began in the 1930s with the emergence of foundries and workshops servicing the textile and agricultural sectors. The commissioning of the Pykara hydroelectric project in 1932 provided a crucial boost, offering abundant electricity to fuel industrial growth. The Great Depression unexpectedly benefited the city, allowing industrialists to import machinery at low costs, leading to the establishment of composite textile units.

The growth of technical educational institutions played a key role in Coimbatore’s transformation into an engineering hub. Initially, foundries lacked skilled technical personnel, but the children of foundry workers increasingly pursued engineering education, creating a skilled workforce and furthering the growth of both the textile and engineering sectors.

This historical overview, drawn from sources including the Southern India Mills’ Association’s “SIMA 75, A Journey Through 75 Years” and insights from A.V. Varadarajan, former president of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association, highlights Coimbatore’s remarkable journey from a textile-centric city to a diversified industrial powerhouse.
