**Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh:** The death of a 23-year-old Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Karhal constituency has ignited a fierce political battle during today’s by-elections. Her body was discovered this morning in a sack, prompting allegations from her family that a local Samajwadi Party (SP) worker pressured her to vote against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The woman’s father claims that Prashant Yadav, an SP worker, visited their home three days prior, demanding to know her voting preference. Upon learning she intended to vote for the BJP (represented by the ‘lotus’ symbol) due to receiving a home under the PM Awas Yojana, Yadav allegedly threatened her to vote for the SP (‘cycle’ symbol).
Police have arrested Yadav and Mohan Katheria in connection with the case. Mainpuri district police chief Vinod Kumar confirmed the parents allege their daughter was murdered for her voting choice.
The BJP has launched a strong attack on the SP, with state BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary alleging Yadav and his associates brutally murdered the woman for her refusal to vote SP.
The SP, however, denies any involvement. Karhal candidate Tej Pratap Yadav called for a thorough investigation, while party spokesperson Rajendra Choudhary termed the incident a BJP conspiracy to defame the SP. The party also accused police of voter intimidation.
The incident unfolds amidst a tense bypoll campaign across nine Uttar Pradesh Assembly constituencies, including Karhal, previously represented by SP leader Akhilesh Yadav. The ongoing blame game between the BJP and SP further intensifies the already heated political climate. Akhilesh Yadav himself has accused the state administration and police of hindering voters. The BJP counters that the SP’s allegations are born out of frustration over anticipated losses. The investigation into the woman’s death is expected to play a significant role in the ongoing political conflict.
