Mon Nov 18 06:14:03 UTC 2024: **Avignon Rape Trial: Victim Receives Crucial Support During Grueling Proceedings**

AVIGNON, FRANCE (November 18, 2024) – Gisele Pelicot, the 71-year-old victim in a high-profile rape trial in Avignon, is receiving vital emotional and practical support from Anne-Sophie Langlet, a representative of the Association for Mediation and Assistance to Victims (Amav). Pelicot’s former husband, Dominique Pelicot, is on trial, accused of drugging and repeatedly raping her over nearly a decade, along with dozens of other men who allegedly participated.

The trial, which began in September and is expected to conclude in December, has garnered international attention. Pelicot, who has become a symbol for victims of sexual assault, has bravely chosen to make the proceedings public to raise awareness about the use of drugs to facilitate sexual abuse. The experience has been incredibly difficult, however, and Langlet’s role has been crucial in helping Pelicot and her family navigate the legal and emotional toll.

Langlet, a socio-legal assistant, provides not only moral support but also helps Pelicot and her three children understand the complex legal proceedings. She maintains a neutral stance, distinct from the lawyers, offering a safe space for Pelicot to process her emotions and ask questions. This support includes stress-reduction techniques like breathing exercises. A designated “decompression chamber” has also been set up near the courtroom, providing a haven for the family with food and drinks.

Amav, one of 130 French associations supporting victims of crime, was requested by the Avignon public prosecutor’s office to assist Pelicot’s family. Pelicot’s lawyer, Stephane Babonneau, praised Amav’s support, describing Langlet and her colleagues as “very human, very competent” and essential in helping Pelicot endure the ordeal. The trial continues with 50 men facing accusations alongside Dominique Pelicot.
