Mon Nov 18 12:53:58 UTC 2024: ## Iran Prepares for Supreme Leader Succession Amidst Health Rumors

**Tehran, Iran** – Concerns over the health of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have intensified, prompting the Assembly of Experts, responsible for selecting his successor, to announce the preparation of a shortlist. While the Assembly has confirmed a shortlist of three candidates, the names remain undisclosed.

The announcement came Friday during prayers, amidst heightened tensions with Israel. Iranian media reports suggest Khamenei himself urged the Assembly to be prepared for a swift succession process, expressing a sense of potential threat from Israel. Rumors of Khamenei’s ill health, including reports of unconsciousness, have circulated. However, a picture of Khamenei meeting with Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon on Monday morning was posted on his X account, seemingly aimed at dispelling these rumors.

Among the names speculated as potential successors is Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, a figure heavily involved in Iranian policy-making for 27 years. Another leading candidate is Alireza Arafi, a member of the Guardian Council and the second deputy chairman of the Assembly of Experts. While the names of Ali Khamenei, Hassan Khomeini (grandsons of the Islamic Republic’s founder, Ruhollah Khomeini), and Assembly chairman, Hashem Hosseini Bushehri, are also circulating, their lack of membership in the Assembly makes their selection less likely. The Assembly of Experts is expected to formally announce the chosen successor when the time comes.
