ORLANDO, FL – The University of Central Florida (UCF) has been awarded the Seal of Excelencia, a national recognition for its outstanding commitment to Latino student success. UCF is one of only nine institutions nationwide to receive this prestigious three-year certification (2024-2027).
The Seal of Excelencia recognizes institutions that demonstrably serve Latino students across data, practice, and leadership. UCF’s dedication is evident in various programs such as CREAR Futuros, which pairs underclassmen with upperclassment mentors, and the LatinX Leadership program, which explores LatinX leadership through Juana Bordas’ book, “The Power of Latino Leadership.” The university also provides professional development opportunities for faculty to better support Latino students.
Dr. Cyndia Morales Muñiz, senior director of UCF’s Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives, highlighted the university’s five-year journey to achieve this recognition. She emphasized the HSI’s commitment to student success through increased retention, progression, and graduation rates. The HSI also supports faculty with tools and mechanisms to enhance classroom inclusivity. Other initiatives include Grow with Google, which helps students develop digital and professional skills.
Donna Mercado, student resources manager for UCF’s College of Nursing and professor of the LatinX Leadership class, explained that the certification signifies a welcoming environment for Latino students. The course itself aims to foster understanding of LatinX leadership, identity, history, and current issues within the community. Students in the class will engage in community service as part of their learning experience.
This accomplishment underscores UCF’s ongoing commitment to creating an equitable and supportive learning environment for all its students. The university’s comprehensive approach to serving Latino students has earned it national recognition and sets a high standard for other institutions striving to improve access and success for underrepresented populations.
