Australian airline Qantas is set to revolutionize long-haul air travel with its ambitious “Project Sunrise,” launching nonstop flights from Sydney to London and New York in 2026. These ultra-long-haul flights, lasting a record-breaking 19 to 22 hours, will cut travel time by up to four hours compared to current options.
The project, named after the passengers’ experience of seeing two sunrises in a row, will break the current record for the longest commercial flight, currently held by Singapore Airlines’ 18-hour journey from Singapore to New York.
While the prospect of significantly reduced travel time is enticing, Qantas acknowledges the unique challenges of spending almost a full day in the air. The airline has collaborated with Boeing and Airbus since 2017 to develop ultra-long-range versions of their widebody aircraft, specifically designed for comfort and safety.
Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson emphasized the project’s significance, stating that “Project Sunrise speaks to Australians’ hunger to fly point to point,” and that the flights will be a great way for Australians to “break out and see the world” on the A350.
The airline assures potential flyers that its fleet of specially designed Airbus A350s will “overcome the tyranny of distance,” with the ability to travel between Australia and almost any city in the world.
With Project Sunrise, Qantas is poised to redefine long-haul air travel, pushing the boundaries of aviation and bringing Australia closer to the world.
