**Mumbai, India:** Eight individuals, including employees of leading mobile phone service providers and shop owners, were arrested on Thursday by the Mumbai Crime Branch’s Cyber Police Station for their alleged involvement in a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme. The gang is accused of illegally porting mobile phone numbers without proper Know Your Customer (KYC) documents and providing them to fraudsters for creating WhatsApp groups used to lure victims into bogus investment schemes.

The investigation began after a man reported losing ₹51.33 lakh to a fraudulent investment scheme between May 14 and June 28. The victim’s number was traced to a WhatsApp group created using an illegally ported SIM card.

Police discovered that the gang had sold at least 3,000 numbers in this illegal manner, allowing fraudsters to target unsuspecting victims through WhatsApp groups. The group is believed to have defrauded countless people of millions of rupees through these fake investment schemes.

The arrested individuals are currently facing charges related to cybercrime, fraud, and violation of KYC regulations. The Mumbai police are continuing their investigation to identify the mastermind behind this operation and uncover the full extent of the fraud.
