Fri Nov 15 19:25:00 IST 2024: ## Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited Launches Green Initiative to Combat Climate Change

**Kollam, November 15, 2024:** The Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML) is set to launch “Punarjani Pachathuruthu”, a green initiative aimed at restoring the environment and combating climate change. The project will see the transformation of 30 acres of previously mined land into a green haven, in collaboration with the Haritha Keralam Mission.

This initiative is a first-of-its-kind in Kerala, utilizing mined land to create a “green island”. The project involves preparing the soil using coir pith and leaf litter, followed by planting various tree saplings. Experts from the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute have conducted a study to determine suitable species, focusing on endangered plants.

In addition to endangered species, the project will also feature high-yielding cashew saplings procured from the Kerala State Agency for the expansion of Cashew Cultivation (KSACC), and a variety of native tree saplings.

The inauguration of “Punarjani Pachathuruthu” will take place on Saturday, with Industries Minister P Rajeeve as the chief guest. Other dignitaries attending include Sujith Vijayan Pillai, MLA, and N.K. Premachandran, MP. The project signifies KMML’s commitment to environmental sustainability and underscores the importance of green initiatives in the fight against climate change.
