Fri Nov 15 14:12:28 UTC 2024: ## Bengaluru Needs Massive EV Charging Infrastructure by 2030: Study
**Bengaluru, November 15, 2024:** A new study by the Center for Study of Science, Technology, and Policy (CSTEP) projects that Bengaluru will need a significant increase in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure by 2030 to meet the growing demand. The study, titled “Bengaluru 2030: EV charging demand and infrastructure,” predicts over 23 lakh EVs on the city’s roads by 2030, requiring more than 36,000 public charging points and 400 new charging stations.
This translates to a 25-fold increase in public charging points compared to 2023. The study identified potential locations for new charging stations including IT parks, metro stations, fuel stations, shopping malls, and RTO zones.
The study also highlights the potential impact of EV demand on the city’s electricity grid. By 2030, EV charging could account for 7% to 9% of Bengaluru’s annual energy demand, with a projected peak load of 1.2 gigawatts.
The CSTEP study emphasizes the importance of promoting home charging, as it would put the least strain on the electricity grid. However, it also suggests policies to encourage charging at workplaces or public stations during the day to maximize the use of renewable energy for EV charging.
The study’s findings underline the urgent need for Bengaluru to develop robust EV charging infrastructure to facilitate the transition to a greener transportation system.
