**Dehradun:** A fatal accident at ONGC Chowk on November 12th, claiming the lives of six young people, has exposed a major flaw in Dehradun’s Smart City initiative. Despite the presence of numerous CCTV cameras at the intersection, the accident was not captured on any of the surveillance footage. This has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the city’s security measures and sparked outrage from Urban Development Minister, Premchand Aggarwal.
The accident, which involved a speeding Innova car colliding with a container truck, resulted in the tragic loss of six lives. Minister Aggarwal expressed deep sorrow over the incident and demanded an explanation from Smart City authorities for the absence of CCTV footage.
“If Smart City has installed cameras, they should be functional. The purpose for which these cameras were installed needs to be fulfilled,” Aggarwal stated, adding that the cameras shouldn’t be merely for show. He expressed his concern over the lack of accountability, emphasizing that the absence of recordings sends a wrong message to the public.
Smart City officials attributed the failure to capture the accident to various factors, including ongoing electricity and water work in the city, which often leads to cable cutting. However, they confirmed that no such work was being done at ONGC Chowk during the time of the accident.
Further investigation revealed that while the cameras at the intersection were functioning, a recent cyber attack had disrupted the recording software. Some footage from the night of the accident is available, but unfortunately, the footage from the time of the crash is missing.
The lack of CCTV footage has hampered investigations into the cause of the accident, making it difficult to determine who was at fault. Minister Aggarwal has ordered a thorough inquiry into the matter and has demanded that all cameras installed in the city be inspected and made fully functional.
The incident has highlighted the importance of ensuring that Smart City initiatives are not only implemented but also maintained effectively to achieve their intended purpose of enhancing security and providing evidence in critical situations.
