Thu Nov 14 09:10:26 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Clinches Rain-Affected First ODI Against New Zealand by 45 Runs
**Dambulla, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lanka secured a dominant 45-run victory over New Zealand in the rain-interrupted first ODI on Wednesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
Kusal Mendis (143 runs) and Avishka Fernando (100 runs) both slammed centuries, guiding Sri Lanka to a commanding 324-5 in 49.2 overs before rain forced a stoppage. The impressive 206-run partnership between the two was the highest for any wicket in ODIs between the two nations.
New Zealand, chasing a revised target of 221 runs in 27 overs, were restricted to 175-9 despite a strong start.
The Kiwis’ initial momentum was halted by a cluster of wickets after the drinks break, with Maheesh Theekshana and Charith Asalanka contributing crucial breakthroughs. Dilshan Madushanka, the star of the Sri Lankan bowling attack, finished with three wickets, including a crucial late dismissal of Nathan Smith to end the chase.
“The boys responded perfectly after a chat at the drinks break,” said Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka, highlighting his team’s resilience. “We knew we needed one breakthrough, and Theekshana and I delivered.”
While disappointed with the performance, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged the impact of rain and dew. “Losing wickets in clusters never helps,” he said. “We have a lot to learn from this game.”
The second ODI will take place on Sunday at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, with both teams looking to make adjustments and gain momentum for the series.
