In a move that has sent shockwaves through political circles, US President-elect Donald Trump announced the creation of a new “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) headed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
The department, which draws its name from the Dogecoin cryptocurrency often touted by Musk, aims to tackle government bureaucracy, cut unnecessary regulations, reduce wasteful spending, and restructure federal agencies. Musk and Ramaswamy will operate outside of the government, providing advice and guidance to the White House and Office of Management and Budget.
Trump, who has repeatedly called for government reform, likened the DOGE to the “Manhattan Project,” the World War II research program that developed the first nuclear weapons. He believes that this initiative could be a game-changer for the US government.
Musk, in a statement, said the DOGE will “send shockwaves through the system” and target those responsible for government waste. He pledged transparency, with all actions of the DOGE being posted online. Furthermore, a “leaderboard” will be created to highlight the most “insanely dumb spending” of taxpayer dollars.
However, Musk’s position has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. His companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, have received billions in federal contracts and benefited from government spending, including electric vehicle tax credits and infrastructure investments.
The move comes as no surprise given Musk’s outspoken support for Trump and his significant contributions to his re-election campaign. The DOGE, though lacking formal authority, could have a major impact on how the Trump administration approaches government operations.
