Mysuru, India – Renowned Ashtanga Yoga teacher R. Sharath Jois, 53, passed away in Virginia, USA, on Monday, November 11, 2024. Jois, the grandson of famed yoga guru K. Pattabhi Jois, was a prominent figure in the global yoga community, carrying on his grandfather’s legacy of Ashtanga Yoga.
Jois, born in Mysuru in 1971, inherited the mantle of Ashtanga Yoga from his grandfather, learning the practice from a young age. After Pattabhi Jois’ passing in 2009, Sharath continued to teach the discipline, establishing the Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysuru. He traveled extensively, teaching students across the world.
The cause of death is unconfirmed, although sources indicate Sharath Jois experienced breathing difficulties during a hike following a class.
Tributes have poured in from the yoga community, with many expressing their deep sorrow and loss. Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, a prominent yoga advocate, described Jois as a respected figure who carried on his grandfather’s legacy with dedication.
Yoga teacher Dr. B.P. Murthy highlighted Jois’ significant contribution to the continuation of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, which his grandfather made famous, even among celebrities like pop star Madonna.
Sharath Jois is survived by his wife, two children, and his mother, Saraswathi Jois. He will be remembered for his dedication to teaching and his role in keeping the tradition of Ashtanga Yoga alive for future generations.
