Charlottesville, Virginia – Sharath Jois, the internationally celebrated yoga master who carried on the legacy of his grandfather, Krishna Pattabhi Jois, passed away on Monday after suffering a heart attack while hiking near the University of Virginia campus. He was 53.
Jois was renowned for his teachings of Ashtanga yoga, a demanding style of yoga that gained immense popularity worldwide in the 1990s, thanks in part to his grandfather’s efforts. Ashtanga, rooted in Sanskrit and Hindu rituals, involves a rigorous series of postures and dynamic movements, and is considered one of the most accessible forms of exercise today.
Jois’s workshops, held in his hometown in India and internationally, attracted thousands of students seeking direct instruction from the leader of the Ashtanga tradition. He was known as the “Paramaguru,” meaning lineage holder, and was affectionately referred to as the “boss” in Mysore, India, the birthplace of Ashtanga. His workshops were consistently overbooked, with students eager to learn from the renowned master.
Prominent students like Kino MacGregor have praised Jois’s teaching abilities, describing him as an “excellent yoga teacher, one of the best.” His legacy extends beyond his teaching, as he co-authored the book “Ageless” in 2018, sharing his knowledge and passion for Ashtanga yoga with a wider audience.
The death of Sharath Jois is a significant loss for the global yoga community. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication to Ashtanga yoga and a devoted following that will continue to honor his teachings and the legacy of his family.
