**Kolkata, India** – Renowned Bengali actor, director, and playwright Manoj Mitra passed away early Tuesday morning at the age of 85. Mitra, a celebrated figure in both theatre and film, succumbed to age-related ailments after being hospitalized since November 3rd.

Mitra, known for his roles in iconic films like Tapan Sinha’s “Banchharamer Bagan” and Satyajit Ray’s “Ghare Baire” and “Ganashatru,” left an enduring mark on Indian cinema. He collaborated with renowned directors including Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Shakti Samanta, Tarun Majumdar, Basu Chatterjee, and Goutam Ghose.

Beyond his acting, Mitra was a prolific playwright, writing over 100 social and politically driven plays. He received numerous accolades for his contributions to the arts, including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademy Award for Best Playwright in 1985.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences on social media, praising Mitra’s immense contributions to the theatre and film worlds. “Saddened by the demise of the famous actor, director, and playwright, ‘Banga Bibhushan‘ Manoj Mitra today morning.
