**Nagapattinam, November 5th:** A student from the Nagapattinam Government Model School, Sakthivel, has been commended by the District Collector, Akash, for his participation in the first-ever International High School Students’ Summit on Tsunami Awareness held in Japan.
The summit, organized to commemorate World Tsunami Awareness Day, brought together students from 44 countries to discuss strategies for disaster preparedness and mitigation. The event, held in Kumamoto, Japan from October 21st to 25th, aimed to empower young individuals to play a vital role in reducing the risk of tsunamis.
Sakthivel, along with students from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman Nicobar, and Odisha, represented India at the summit. The students explored critical topics such as self-help and collaborative disaster prevention, lessons learned from the Kumamoto earthquake, integrated disaster risk reduction, and the importance of post-disaster reconstruction.
This year marked the 12th annual observance of World Tsunami Awareness Day, established in 2016 to foster global awareness and promote preparedness measures against the devastating effects of tsunamis.
