**Kolkata, India** – The West Bengal Election Commission is investigating allegations that BJP state president and Union minister Sukanto Majumdar insulted the national emblem, the Lion Capital of Emperor Ashoka, and the state police during an election rally.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) filed a complaint with the Election Commission alleging that Majumdar, during a speech on November 7th, urged police officers to remove the Ashoka emblem from their uniforms and replace it with an icon resembling footwear. The TMC letter, which quotes Majumdar as saying, “Don’t act as an agent of Trinamool. Remove the Ashoka Stambh on your uniform and replace it with the symbol of a sandal. Don’t hide behind the uniform,” characterizes his remarks as “false, derogatory, and defamatory.”
The TMC argues that Majumdar’s statement not only tarnishes the image of the state police but also constitutes a grave insult to the revered national emblem. The Election Commission has requested Majumdar to respond to the allegations by 8 pm tonight.
Senior TMC leader Sushmita Dev expressed outrage over the incident, stating that the BJP’s “hypocrisy” regarding nationalism is evident, and the Election Commission should take immediate action against Majumdar’s “derogatory remarks.”
This complaint comes in addition to a separate allegation by the TMC that the deployment of Central forces in the state ahead of upcoming by-polls is not following proper protocol and is being used by the BJP to influence voters. The TMC claims that Central forces are coordinating with BJP leaders instead of state police, a violation of electoral rules.
The Election Commission is expected to investigate both allegations and take appropriate action.
