**Sharjah, UAE:** Bangladesh has suffered a major blow ahead of the decisive third ODI against Afghanistan on Monday, with captain Najmul Hossain ruled out of the match due to a groin injury.
The injury occurred during fielding in the second ODI, forcing Hossain to leave the field temporarily. He was replaced as captain by Mehidy Hasan, who will now lead the team for the remaining match.
Confirming the news, BCB Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain told Cricbuzz, “Najmul is not playing the last game against Afghanistan due to a groin injury.”
The injury is serious enough to also rule Hossain out of the upcoming Test series against the West Indies, beginning later this month.
“He underwent an MRI yesterday in Sharjah,” said Dr. Debashis Chowdhury, BCB’s Senior Physician. “The scan report confirmed a Grade II strain on his left groin. This will require a period of rest and rehabilitation.”
Hossain will return home from the UAE to continue his recovery, with his condition to be reassessed in two weeks.
In his absence, Mehidy Hasan will captain Bangladesh in the final ODI against Afghanistan and is expected to lead the Test side in the West Indies.
The news comes as another blow for Bangladesh, who are already without veteran wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim for the ODI series and the upcoming Test matches.
