Sun Nov 10 01:52:46 UTC 2024: ## McSweeney to Open for Australia in India Test Series, Inglis Gets Surprise Call-Up

**Perth, Australia:** Uncapped South Australian captain Nathan McSweeney has been selected to open the batting for Australia in the first Test against India, starting on November 22nd in Perth. McSweeney, 25, earned his spot after a strong start to the domestic season and impressive performances in the Australia A matches against India A.

McSweeney’s selection comes after David Warner’s retirement in January left a void at the top of the order. Steve Smith initially filled the role but struggled, prompting the selectors to seek a new opening partner for Usman Khawaja.

McSweeney faced stiff competition from experienced players like Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft, as well as rising star Sam Konstas. His unbeaten 88 in the first Australia A match at Mackay proved crucial, even though he struggled in the second match in Melbourne.

“Nathan has displayed the attributes we believe will equip him well for Test cricket along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket,” said chief selector George Bailey.

Another surprise inclusion in the 13-man squad is wicket-keeper batter Josh Inglis, who has been in great form in the Sheffield Shield competition. This marks his first selection in the Test squad, despite Bailey previously indicating he was not being considered as a Test opener.

The Australian bowling attack will be led by the experienced trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, with spin king Nathan Lyon looking to add to his impressive wicket tally in his 130th Test. Scott Boland will be the backup quick.

Cameron Green has been ruled out of the series following spine surgery, leading to Mitchell Marsh filling the allrounder role.

The five-match series will move to Adelaide for a day-night Test, followed by matches in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
