Sun Nov 10 08:50:38 UTC 2024: ## Affordable Food Zones Coming to Indian Airports

**New Delhi:** In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on air travelers, the Indian government is planning to introduce “economy zones” at airports across the country. These zones will offer food and beverages at affordable prices, addressing long-standing complaints about exorbitant costs at airport outlets.

Sources reveal that the Civil Aviation Ministry has reached a consensus to implement this initiative after extensive discussions. The plan involves setting up designated areas within airports where passengers can purchase food and drinks without the luxury of seating arrangements. These zones will operate as takeaway counters or offer basic fast-food tables for consumption.

The new zones will be prioritized at newly built airports, with plans to gradually expand to existing facilities. The Ministry will be working closely with the Airport Authority of India (AAI), food outlets, and other agencies to ensure smooth operation of these zones.

This initiative comes in response to widespread dissatisfaction over high prices charged at airport restaurants. Several passengers, including former Union Minister P. Chidambaram, had publicly criticized the inflated costs. In a recent post, Chidambaram highlighted the exorbitant price of a simple cup of tea at a prominent café at Kolkata airport.

The introduction of affordable food zones is expected to be a welcome change for air travelers, allowing them to enjoy a meal without breaking the bank.
