Sun Nov 10 02:37:36 UTC 2024: ## Chief Justice Chandrachud’s Tenure: A Focus on Personal Liberty and Efficiency

Outgoing Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud’s two-year tenure, ending on November 10, 2024, has been marked by a strong emphasis on personal liberty, expeditious case disposal, and tackling economic offenses, particularly those related to money laundering.

During his tenure, the Supreme Court saw a remarkable focus on clearing its docket. The Court filed 111,498 new cases and disposed of 107,403 cases, demonstrating a commitment to efficiency. Chandrachud prioritized personal liberty, particularly in bail cases, addressing 21,358 such matters. He also actively tackled economic offenses, with the court disposing of 907 cases related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Chief Justice Chandrachud also prioritized addressing long-pending constitutional cases. He established numerous constitutional benches, leading to the disposal of 33 crucial constitutional cases that had remained unresolved for years.

In his final address, Chandrachud acknowledged the rising pendency in the Supreme Court, reaching 82,000 cases. However, he explained that this increase was partly due to a more transparent approach to recording cases, including previously unregistered or defective ones.

Chief Justice Chandrachud personally authored 92 judgments during his tenure, a notable number compared to his predecessors. He will be succeeded by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who will be sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11, 2024.
