Fri Nov 08 16:38:39 UTC 2024: ## Mozambique Crackdown on Protests Leaves at Least 30 Dead: HRW

**Maputo, Mozambique (November 8, 2024):** Human Rights Watch (HRW) has reported that at least 30 people have been killed in Mozambique over the past three weeks during crackdowns on protests against the disputed Presidential election.

The unrest began following the October 9th election, where the ruling Frelimo party, in power for almost 50 years, secured over 70% of the vote. Opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane, backed by the Podemos party, contested the results, alleging they were fraudulent. He has used social media to mobilize supporters, leading to clashes with security forces.

On November 7th, thousands of protestors took to the streets of Maputo, the capital, engaging in violent clashes with police and soldiers. Maputo Central Hospital confirmed three deaths and 66 injuries, including four in critical condition, as a result of the demonstration.

The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) reported a separate death toll of 34 as of November 7th, describing the response as “brutal state repression”. While authorities have yet to confirm any death toll, they are expected to address the situation later today.

The ongoing violence raises concerns about the government’s response to peaceful dissent and the potential for further escalation of the situation.
