**Imphal, November 10, 2024:** The escalating violence in Manipur claimed two more lives over the weekend, with the victims belonging to different communities, further exacerbating the ongoing ethnic conflict.
On Thursday night, a 31-year-old Hmar woman was allegedly shot, raped, and set ablaze in her home in Jiribam district by suspected Meitei insurgents. Her husband filed a police report, alleging the attackers also set fire to several other houses in the area.
The Hmar Inpui, a civil society organisation, condemned the horrific crime, stating the woman was shot in the leg and unable to escape. They accused the attackers of disregarding her humanity and inflicting unimaginable suffering on her and her family.
The Jiribam Superintendent of Police requested permission to conduct an autopsy with video recording in Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Assam due to the lack of forensic facilities in the district and the challenging transportation situation.
On Saturday, a Meitei woman was shot dead by suspected Kuki insurgents while working in a paddy field in Bishnupur district. The incident occurred amidst allegations that Kuki insurgents, disguised as “village defense volunteers,” operate in the foothills near valley paddy fields.
Following these incidents, protests erupted in both Kuki-dominated and Meitei-dominated areas, demanding justice for the victims.
The Kuki tribes and the Meitei community have been locked in a violent conflict since May 2023 over issues including land rights and political representation. This latest round of killings has further inflamed tensions and raised serious concerns about the potential for further escalation of the violence.
