Former Vice President Mike Pence, who had a strained relationship with Donald Trump in recent years, extended congratulations to the former president on his 2024 election victory. In a post on X, Pence also congratulated Vice President-Elect JD Vance and other Republican winners in the House and Senate.
Pence’s message comes after he openly criticized Trump during the election cycle, even launching and later ending his own presidential campaign and publicly stating he could not support Trump’s bid for re-election.
The split between the two stemmed from the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot, where Pence refused to overturn the 2020 election results, a move Trump had pressured him to make.
Despite past disagreements, Pence’s congratulatory message signals a potential move towards reconciliation. Pence continues to advocate for conservative policies through his political organization Advancing American Freedom, and recently campaigned to preserve the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 passed during the Trump administration.
