Fri Nov 08 02:59:53 UTC 2024: ## Israel to Open Second Crossing for Gaza Aid, US Deadline Looms

**Washington, November 8, 2024:** Israel has announced it will open a second crossing point for humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, following pressure from the United States. The move comes as a U.S.-imposed deadline for improved humanitarian conditions in Gaza approaches next week.

The State Department revealed that Israel informed the U.S. about plans to open the Kissufim crossing in the next few days, in addition to the recently reopened Erez crossing. This comes after Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sent a letter to Israel, demanding significant improvements to the humanitarian situation in Gaza by November 13. The letter also warned of potential sanctions, including the withholding of military assistance, if the demands are not met.

The U.S. officials’ letter, sent before the recent election of President-elect Donald Trump, emphasized the need for consistent aid delivery through four major crossings and the opening of a fifth, which is now being addressed by Israel. The letter also called for a minimum of 350 trucks per day to be allowed into Gaza, with 229 trucks entering on Tuesday.

The move by Israel is seen as a response to the U.S. pressure, but it remains unclear how the U.S. will assess Israel’s compliance with the aid demands. Outgoing President Joe Biden has repeatedly called for improved humanitarian conditions and civilian protection in Gaza, but has refrained from significant leverage, such as cutting off weapons supplies.

The situation in Gaza continues to be a major concern for the international community, with the war-torn region facing severe humanitarian challenges. The upcoming days will be critical as both the U.S. and Israel navigate the complex situation and strive for a solution to the ongoing conflict.
