**Kolkata, India** – Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command, has called for increased participation from West Bengal’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country’s indigenous defence production.
Speaking at “East Tech,” a two-day defence technology exhibition organized by the Eastern Command in partnership with the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), Lt. Gen. Tiwari highlighted the vast potential of West Bengal’s thriving MSME sector.
“We have over 140 defence industry representatives here showcasing their capabilities,” he stated. “West Bengal has the highest number of MSMEs in India, and I urge the Minister to ensure that a large number of them contribute to the defence sector.”
The exhibition aims to promote the “Make in India” program, particularly in defence procurement. It provides a platform for local businesses to showcase their products and innovative solutions to senior military officials and government stakeholders.
Lt. Gen. Tiwari emphasized the unique challenges faced by the Eastern Command due to its geographically sensitive location and diverse terrain. “We need battlefield equalizers to meet emerging threats,” he said, stressing the need for locally produced technology.
The General highlighted the growing importance of drone warfare and the need for robust counter-drone capabilities. “We require state-of-the-art drones that can operate in high altitudes and contested environments,” he stated. “Our industry partners can provide us with interference-proof drones and counter-drone grids to enhance our operational capabilities.”
Lt. Gen. Tiwari’s call for greater involvement from West Bengal MSMEs in defence production echoes the government’s efforts to bolster indigenous defence capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign imports. The “East Tech” exhibition serves as a crucial platform for connecting local businesses with the defence sector, potentially creating new opportunities for growth and development in the state.
