Fri Nov 01 17:47:52 UTC 2024: ## India Stumble to 86/4 at Stumps on Day 1 of Mumbai Test, Trail New Zealand by 149 Runs

**Mumbai, India:** India found themselves in a precarious position on Day 1 of the third and final Test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Despite a strong start in their first innings, the hosts finished the day on 86/4, trailing New Zealand by 149 runs.

The day began with New Zealand, who won the toss and elected to bat first, posting 235 runs. Daryl Mitchell top-scored for the Kiwis with a gritty 82 runs, narrowly missing out on a century. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming his 14th Test five-wicket haul, with key wickets of Will Young (71) and Glenn Phillips (0). Washington Sundar also contributed significantly, removing Tom Latham (28) and Mitchell in quick succession.

India’s response started promisingly with Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal putting on a 73-run stand for the first wicket. However, a late collapse saw the loss of three wickets in the final 15 minutes of play. Ajaz Patel, who bowled a brilliant spell, removed Jaiswal (30) and Mohammed Siraj (0) in consecutive deliveries. Virat Kohli (4) was then run out after a miscommunication with Gill.

Gill (31*) and Rishabh Pant (1*) will resume batting on Day 2, with India needing to build a strong partnership and minimize the deficit. With the series already lost, India will be aiming to avoid a rare whitewash on home soil.
