In a high-stakes Hollywood bidding war, actress Margot Robbie has secured a theatrical release for her upcoming adaptation of “Wuthering Heights,” choosing Warner Bros. over a lucrative offer from Netflix. The film, directed by Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman,” “Saltburn”), promises a modern, sexy, and gothic take on the classic novel, starring Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff.
While Netflix offered a staggering $150 million for the film, Robbie, who is producing alongside her husband Tom Ackerley and business partner Josey McNamara, prioritised a traditional studio release. This decision reflects Robbie’s commitment to theatrical releases, having previously achieved box-office success with films like “Barbie.”
Warner Bros., leveraging its long-standing relationship with Robbie’s production company LuckyChap, offered a package worth around $80 million plus significant marketing investment. This victory marks a blow to Netflix’s film chief Dan Lin, who had sought to secure the high-profile project.
Despite Netflix’s efforts, co-chief executive Ted Sarandos reiterated the company’s focus on subscription-based entertainment, reaffirming their preference for streaming releases over theatrical debuts.
Robbie, one of the few A-list stars to avoid streaming-only releases, is poised to further solidify her position in Hollywood with “Wuthering Heights,” set to begin production in the first quarter of 2024. This project signifies a win for traditional studios and a testament to the enduring appeal of the theatrical experience.
