**Thiruvananthapuram:** The Travancore Devaswom Board has introduced a new accident insurance policy for Sabarimala pilgrims and staff, offering a Rs 5 lakh payout to the dependents of those who die in accidents. The policy, valid for one year, covers pilgrims and temporary workers in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, and Kottayam. The Devaswom Board will cover the premium costs. Discussions are underway to include medical expenses for those injured in accidents.
Meanwhile, the ongoing controversy surrounding spot bookings at Sabarimala Temple has led to a reduction in virtual queue bookings. The daily quota has been lowered from 80,000 to 70,000.
Preparations for the Mandala-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season are in full swing. A meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, involving the Devaswom Minister, Travancore Devaswom Board officials, police, and district administration, outlined comprehensive arrangements for a smooth pilgrimage. This includes ambulance services at Nilakkal and Pampa, the establishment of 12 emergency medical centers, collaboration with the Forest Department for medical facilities along the Karimala route, and the availability of cardiologists. Road maintenance and safety measures along the forest routes, along with provisions for pilgrims arriving from other states, are also being prioritized.
