Wed Oct 16 19:04:23 UTC 2024: ## India Recalls High Commissioner from Canada Amidst Diplomatic Row
**New Delhi, October 14, 2024:** In a dramatic escalation of tensions between India and Canada, India has decided to recall its High Commissioner and other senior officials from Canada. The decision follows a series of accusations levelled by Canada against India regarding the alleged murder of a Khalistani separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, on Canadian soil.
India has repeatedly dismissed Canada’s allegations as baseless and unfounded, but Canada has continued to accuse India of involvement. The latest escalation came after the Canadian government, in its investigation, linked India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, to the Nijjar killing.
The Indian government, in a statement, cited the “atmosphere of extremism and violence” created by the Trudeau government’s actions and expressed a lack of faith in Canada’s commitment to ensure the safety of its diplomatic personnel.
“The Trudeau government’s actions have jeopardized the safety of our officials,” the statement said. “We have no faith in the current Canadian government’s commitment to ensure their security.”
Meanwhile, Canada’s Chargé d’Affaires, Stewart Wheeler, leaving the Ministry of External Affairs in India, stated that Canada has provided “credible, irrefutable evidence” of ties between Indian government agents and the murder of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil. He called on India to fulfill its promises and investigate the allegations.
This move by India marks a significant escalation in the diplomatic dispute between the two nations and signals a deep breakdown of trust. It remains to be seen how Canada will respond to this latest development.
