Wed Oct 16 12:23:09 UTC 2024: ## Fuel-Siphoning Tragedy: 94 Dead in Nigeria Tanker Explosion
**Jigawa, Nigeria** – A tragic explosion on Wednesday morning claimed the lives of at least 94 people in Jigawa State, northwest Nigeria. The incident occurred when a fuel tanker overturned on an expressway, and residents rushed to the vehicle to collect leaking fuel.
The explosion occurred after the tanker swerved to avoid colliding with another truck near the town of Majia. As locals gathered around the overturned vehicle, an inferno erupted, killing 94 people on the spot, according to Police Spokesman Lawan Shiisu Adam. He warned that the death toll may rise as rescue efforts continue.
Videos from the scene showed a massive fire engulfing the area, with charred bodies scattered amidst the wreckage. The fire continued to burn for several hours.
At least 50 injured individuals were taken to hospitals in Ringim and Hadejia for treatment.
The tragedy underscores the dangerous practice of fuel siphoning, which has become increasingly prevalent in Nigeria as the country faces a severe economic crisis. In September, the price of petrol increased by 39%, leading many to seek alternative sources of fuel.
Experts warn that poor road conditions, reckless driving, and poorly maintained vehicles contribute to the alarming number of deadly truck accidents across Nigeria. Last month, a similar incident in Niger State resulted in the deaths of 48 people. In 2020 alone, Nigeria witnessed 1,531 petrol tanker crashes, claiming 535 lives and injuring 1,142 individuals.
This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the dire need for safety measures and responsible practices in dealing with fuel accidents.
