TAIPEI – Taiwan has condemned the latest round of Chinese military exercises around the island as an “unreasonable provocation.” The drills, which included the deployment of warships and fighter jets, were described by Beijing as a “stern warning” against “separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces.”
The drills mark the latest escalation in tensions between China and Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory. China has repeatedly warned against any formal declaration of independence by Taiwan and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control.
Taiwan, which operates as a self-governing democracy, has maintained that it is an independent entity and has vowed to defend its sovereignty.
The latest military exercises come amid heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait, with China increasing its military activity around the island in recent months.
