Mon Oct 14 09:01:30 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Toll Booths Abolished: Election Ploy or Relief for Commuters?

**Mumbai, India -** Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced today that all toll booths at the five entry points into Mumbai will be abolished, effective immediately. This move, weeks before the state elections, has sparked mixed reactions, with the ruling party touting it as a historic decision for commuters while the opposition accuses it of being an election gimmick.

The toll waiver, which exempts all light motor vehicles from paying the Rs 45 to Rs 75 fee, will reportedly save commuters time and reduce traffic congestion and pollution. The government claims the decision was made after months of discussion and is a response to public demand for years.

However, the opposition, notably the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), has criticized the timing of the announcement, suggesting it is a mere election ploy. They question why the toll was not abolished earlier and express concerns about the continued toll for heavy vehicles, who have already paid for years.

The move is expected to impact the approximately 3.5 lakh vehicles, including 2.8 lakh light vehicles, that used to travel through the toll plazas at Dahisar, Anand Nagar, Vaishali, Airoli, and Mulund, commissioned in 2002.

The decision comes amidst a wave of activism in Mumbai for toll abolition. It remains to be seen whether the move will truly benefit commuters or if it is a calculated move to gain political favor ahead of the elections.
