**CLEVELAND** – The Detroit Tigers are facing a critical decision ahead of Saturday’s crucial Game 5 of the ALDS against the Cleveland Guardians, as slugger Kerry Carpenter’s status remains uncertain due to a hamstring injury.
Carpenter sustained the injury while running the bases during Thursday’s Game 4. Despite the quick turnaround and shortened pre-game time due to weather concerns, Carpenter took batting practice Friday and reported feeling improved.
Manager A.J. Hinch said Carpenter will undergo a full pregame workout before a final decision is made on his availability. “He’s sore and he’s dealing with some discomfort and not feeling 100%, but he’s also feeling some adrenaline for Game 5 in the ALDS,” Hinch said. “So that’s a good counter to not feeling at your best, and hopefully that adrenaline and that excitement will override the issues that he’s dealing with.”
Carpenter’s power has been crucial for the Tigers, particularly after he hit a game-winning three-run homer off Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase in Game 2. He also has 18 homers this season despite playing in just 87 games due to a lower back injury.
While Carpenter likely wouldn’t have started Game 5 due to the Guardians starting left-hander Matthew Boyd, his potential absence could impact the Tigers’ lineup significantly.
