Fri Oct 11 14:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Gen Z Faces Tough Job Market Despite Employer Concerns: Local Perspective Offers Hope
**Albany, NY** – While a recent national study suggests that one in six employers hesitate to hire Gen Z workers due to concerns about professionalism and motivation, local experts and employers at a career fair in Albany paint a different picture.
Recent college graduates Shubhi Gautam and Sean Chahal, attendees at the Crossgates Mall career fair, described the job market as “difficult” with numerous rejections and ghosting experiences. This echoes the national survey findings, where 75% of companies reported dissatisfaction with their college graduate hires, citing lack of motivation, poor communication, and professionalism.
However, local experts point out that these concerns are not entirely new. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that unemployment among young adults has been on the rise since September 2023, reaching 14.3% for 16 to 19 year-olds and 7.0% for 20 to 24 year-olds, the highest among all age groups over 20. This trend, however, has persisted since the 1950s, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
Despite the challenges, employers like Yemi Adeniyi, a Talent and Acquisitions Manager at KIPP Capital Region Public Schools, recognize the potential of Gen Z, particularly their adeptness with technology. “Gen Z is moving towards a more social media-based approach,” Adeniyi said.
With Gen Z set to make up nearly 30% of the workforce by 2025, experts like Dalal urge companies to avoid stereotyping the generation and recognize their unique skills. Events like the career fair at Crossgates Mall are seen as a positive step in bridging the gap between Gen Z job seekers and potential employers, with companies expressing consistent interest in participating.
“This is like the fifth career fair we’ve had, and every time we do it, companies say they want to do it again,” said James Geraghty, an official from Pyramid Management Group, which manages Crossgates Mall. This suggests that while the job market may present challenges for Gen Z, opportunities and collaboration are emerging, offering a glimmer of hope for the future of this generation in the workforce.
