**Sidon, Lebanon** – Fishermen in the coastal city of Sidon are facing dire economic hardship after Israel issued warnings for residents to evacuate from areas in southwestern Lebanon, including the coastal town of Naqoura. The Israeli military’s directive, which encompasses over a dozen towns and villages, has effectively barred fishermen from accessing their traditional fishing grounds.
“We have about 400 or 500 fishermen who rely on the sea to make a living,” explained Mohammed Baouje, a fisherman from Sidon. “If we don’t work, we have nothing. We need to feed our families. Israel is banning us from going out to sea, which makes no sense. There’s nothing in the sea to justify this.”
The Israeli military claims its operations are aimed at halting a year of rocket attacks by Hezbollah and enabling the return of tens of thousands of its citizens to their homes in the north. However, the evacuations and restrictions have left Lebanese fishermen in a precarious position, forcing them to choose between their livelihoods and potential danger.
The ongoing conflict, which escalated in mid-September, has displaced over 1 million Lebanese. While Hezbollah continues its attacks, vowing to persist until a ceasefire is reached in Gaza, the repercussions on the Lebanese population, particularly those reliant on the sea, are far-reaching and deeply concerning.
