**KOLLAM:** Renowned Malayalam actor T P Madhavan passed away early Wednesday morning at the age of 88. He was undergoing treatment for stomach ailments at a private hospital in Kollam.
Madhavan, who acted in over 600 films throughout his career, was best known for his versatile roles and was also the first general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). He was residing at Gandhi Bhavan in Pathanapuram, Kollam, for the past nine years, where a dedicated room was allotted to him.
The actor, who had left the film industry eight years ago, faced a health crisis in Haridwar and was brought back to Kerala. He was subsequently taken to Gandhi Bhavan by serial director Prasad, where he later re-entered the entertainment industry by appearing in a few serials.
Madhavan’s room at Gandhi Bhavan was adorned with mementos and statues, including the Ramu Karyat and Prem Nazeer awards he received after his return to Kerala.
Born to noted lecturer N P Pillai and Saraswathi in Thiruvananthapuram, Madhavan was the nephew of veteran dramatist T N Gopinathan Nair and grandson of the eminent linguist P K Narayana Pillai. He pursued post-graduation in Sociology from Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, formerly Agra University, and had briefly served in the Indian Army before embarking on a career in media.
He began his acting journey with the 1975 film “Raagam” and was married to Sudha, with whom he had a son, Raja Krishna Menon, a prominent Bollywood film director, and a daughter, Devika.
Madhavan’s funeral will be held at Shanthikavadam in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
