Wed Oct 09 06:22:13 UTC 2024: ## England’s Joe Root Edges Closer to Sachin Tendulkar’s Record, Reaches 5th 1000+ Run Calendar Year
**Rawalpindi, Pakistan:** England’s star batsman Joe Root is on the verge of equaling Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most calendar years with over 1000 Test runs, after reaching the milestone during the first innings of the first Test against Pakistan.
Root, who has now achieved this feat for the fifth time in his career in 2024, is just one calendar year behind Tendulkar’s record of six years with 1000+ Test runs.
The 32-year-old achieved this landmark during Pakistan’s first innings, which saw the hosts score a massive 556 runs thanks to centuries from Salman Ali Agha (104 not out), Abdullah Shafique (102), and captain Shan Masood (151).
Chasing a challenging target, England faced an early setback when their captain Ollie Pope was dismissed by Naseem Shah. However, Root steadied the ship and finished the day unbeaten on 32 off 54 balls, striking two boundaries with his trademark cautious approach.
Root’s achievement places him alongside cricketing legends like Brian Lara, Matthew Hayden, Jacques Kallis, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, and Alastair Cook, who have all achieved the feat of scoring 1000+ Test runs in five calendar years.
In a display of aggressive batting, Jack Crawley contributed a rapid 64 runs off 64 balls, including 11 boundaries. His unbeaten partnership of 92 with Root helped England end the day on 96/1, still trailing Pakistan by 460 runs.
England will be looking to reduce the deficit and build a solid response to Pakistan’s imposing total as they resume their innings on day two.
